Japan is close. To Ukraine, Europe, America, and Canada

It seems like we’re too remote from each other, but under one sky there are no strangers.

Japan has won the hearts of Ukrainian designers with its hazel-eyed glance of serenity and peace, with its calm cautious steps and modest soul.

Plan

Fujiwara Yoshi is an 800 square meter maze designed to get lost in the greatness of Japanese culture and not even try to find a way out.

JAPANESE COSINESS WITH A UKRAINIAN SOUL

MAKHNO studio has realized the design project of the biggest Japanese restaurant in Ukraine, and the biggest in Europe – Fujiwara Yoshi. It is named after the founder, a Japanese chef, who continued his career in Ukraine. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of a residential complex in the centre of Ukraine and occupies 800 square meters.

PLANNING

Efficient planning emphasizes the harmony of the space: there are 5 private rooms, the banquet room, the main hall, the conference room, and the terrace. Among the private ones, there are tea rooms with tatami mats, a room with scrolls, and metal lamps-bells. These are the perfect places for both fast and furious meetings with friends with sake, and serene family lunches with matcha tea.

WORKING AREAS

The working zones are hidden among the ikebanas: tempura bar – a place for making battered and deep-fried dishes, robata grill – a traditional Japanese grill, a special table for tuna dressing, bar and a hidden main kitchen.

JAPANESE TRADITIONS WITH A UKRAINIAN SOUL

“Most of the Japanese restaurants are chamber, petty and cosy. That’s why we paid a lot of attention to the planning of the restaurant, which now allows placing up to 250 people simultaneously. Nevertheless, we have saved the atmosphere of cosiness and serenity”, – remarks Illia Tovstonog, an architect at MAKHNO Studio.

“This project is very special to me. Japan is my country of power. It’s a country I fall in love with more and more every single time I travel there. And each time I want more. That’s why I was extremely happy to bring part of my love to the heart of Ukraine. Our main task was to get across the Japanese philosophy decently, not to shout it out with cliché things. The design of the restaurant is a cosiness dictated by Japan and read by the Ukrainian soul”, – tells Serhii Makhno, the MAKHNO studio founder.

Bonsai trees were delivered straight from Japan. Now they will tell the stories of their country to the guests of the restaurant. The aquariums with a volume of 1,400 and 400 litres are the keys to always fresh seafood from the salt and fresh waters and fascinated glances of the little Yoshi guests.

The working zones are hidden among the ikebanas: tempura bar – a place for making battered and deep-fried dishes, robata grill – a traditional Japanese grill, a special table for tuna dressing, bar and a hidden main kitchen. In the restaurant, there is also a sushi bar – a special stand with a chef cooking in front of the visitors and putting a ready dish straight on their plates. It is not only an interesting process to witness, but also a chance to taste sushi that hasn’t outlasted a minute.

The architects are convinced that a Japanese restaurant can only be created by a Japanese in Japan, Yoshi Fujiwara is a centuries-old Japanese tradition with a Ukrainian soul. Two cultures are harmoniously combined here, creating a unique atmosphere.
Japanese
The stone slabs on the walls are in the shape of cards from the traditional Japanese game 100 Poems by 100 Poets. A large cabinet is filled with Japanese sake barrels. Ceramic Japanese dolls, wooden Fuji lamps in honour of the white-browed Japanese mountain and lamps in the shape of a “chasen” – a crown for Japanese matcha tea by MAKHNO Products. A collection of young Japanese bonsai trees. Ikebana filled with light. Food. The smell. The atmosphere.
Ukrainian
Parquetry is made of Ukrainian wood, created using cross-brushed technology. Collectable plates in ethnic motifs. Ceramic lamps in the shape of poppies and metal bell lamps. Chairs made of wood and linen are ready to absorb you in comfort and softness. And all of this was made especially for Yoshi by the architecture and design studio MAKHNO Products.
